Shadowgrounds Troubleshooting & FAQ

Shadowgrounds, just like any other PC game, can have incompatibility issues with certain PC hardware. However, most of these issues have been solved already, so please check the questions below before using the Feedback Form to report a problem. Also check that you have the latest Shadowgrounds patches installed.

If you are having problems related to the game itself, or if you are stuck in some specific place, please check the excellent Shadowgrounds walkthrough on GameFAQs.

If you are having technical problems, please make sure that you have the latest graphics card drivers. ATI and NVIDIA update their drivers regularly, and often the updates help. For example, NVIDIA's 84.21 drivers fixed a very nasty GeForce 6600GT shadow-related problem with Shadowgrounds.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The game doesn't install properly or stucks at 99%
If the Shadowgrounds installer gets stuck to 99% or 100%, and you have waited for a minute or so, then you have nothing to worry about. At this moment the installer is trying to install Windows Media Codecs. The problem is most likely caused by anti-virus software or other such security methods. The codecs are required to show the videos in the game but most likely your computer already has the codecs. So you can simply shut down the Application from the Windows Task Manager and play the game. If you encounter any problems with the videos, get in touch with the Feedback Form.

What are the Launcher options?
Below is a screenshot of the Launcher options and an explanation of some of the most useful options:

Shadowgrounds Launcher
In general, the overall options that you would select from the Launcher's standard menu (not the Advanced menu) should be quite well adjusted for most cases. If you have a CPU and a graphics card that are of "the same caliber", you should have no need to tweak the individual options found in the Advanced menu. If you have an old CPU but a new graphics card, or vice versa, then adjusting the individual Advanced options accordingly may give you better visual quality with no significant performance loss.

If you are experiencing a big framerate drop during fights, then you probably have a bottleneck caused by the CPU. If you have constantly low framerates, even when nothing is happening, then your performance is probably limited by the graphics card. (Of course, in reality, it's not this simple, but this is a good guideline.)

Ground Shadows Texture - this option affects the shadows that are projected on theground/floor from various static/semi-dynamic light sources. This option defines the resolution at which the shadows are drawn. If you set it to lowest setting, you'll have shadows with slightly jagged edges. If you set it to highest setting, the shadows should be sharp. Which setting is best for you, depends on your screen resolution, graphics card and preference... (If you have a very low screen resolution, raising the shadows texture quality very high won't make much difference.) This option will mostly just affect your graphics card performance, setting it to a higher setting will not add any CPU load.

Shadow Texture Quality - this option affects the shadows that you get from dynamic lights (player's flashlight being the most common one). Basically the effect is the same as with the above "Ground Shadows Texture". Low quality may give you shadows with jagged edges, high quality will not. Mostly affects graphics card performance, and not CPU.

Shadows Level - when set on very low, this option will disable most shadows. When set on low/medium, this will disable some shadows and render only the most apparently visible shadows (may cause some shadow "popping" at screen edges), when set on higher settings this option will render the maximum amount of shadows. Mostly affects graphics card performance, some effect on CPU too.

Misc - this option affects a lot of miscellaneous quality factors. Along with the "Weather Effects Level" option, this option probably has the most CPU performance effect... So if you have a slow CPU but a good graphics card, these 2 options are probably the ones you'll want to lower first. (In case of a slow CPU, you probably should not set these above the medium setting, or at most the high setting. Never very high.)

Distortion Effects - this will have a huge performance hit on your graphics card. Use it only if you have a powerful graphics card. Not-so-powerful graphics cards will most likely take a big hit if the Distortion Effects are on. (The Distortion Effects are used in explosions and in the water effects, and they also add significant coolness to the Flamethrower.)

It is possible to tweak some of the rendering options even more accurately than what the Launcher allows. You'll have to either manually edit the configuration files or use the game console to modify those options. However, there should be no need to do any such tweaking, as the Launcher already offers more than enough options to tweak.

The Launcher text does not fit the window!
There have been some problems with widescreen resolutions but those should be fixed. However, there is a known bug that makes the text and buttons go out of the Launcher window, like in the adjacent picture.

Most likely your DPI settings are turned up. Turning them down should fix the problem. We may fix the need for turning them down in an upcoming patch, but for now please do so.

The settings can be found in the Control Panel -> Display Properties -> Settings tab -> Advanced button -> General tab -> DPI Setting. The normal size is 96.

I can't click anything in the menu?!
There have been two reports of users not being able to click any of the menu buttons with the mouse. When the cursor is over a menu item (such as "NEW GAME"), a mouse-over sound plays but nothing happens with the mouse click.

Here is the solution (at least in one particular case):

Check that the game assigns the correct buttons for the mouse. Go to your Shadowgrounds directory, and then \Profiles\Default\Config\ and open keybinds.txt. Find the line that says "attack = button-1". Button-1 is the left mouse button. If there's something else here, you can replace it with button-1. If you are not using gamepad(s), then there should not be any texts like "joypay-1" or such at all.

If this does not help, then you should also check that there are no mouse drivers/programs that interfere with the game - go to Control Panel, Mouse, and then check that everything looks normal, or in the most extreme case see if you can disable any extra features.

My game doesn't start or crashes at the first loading screen
Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0c or later installed. Also make sure you have the latest graphics card drivers.

If the game crashes at the first loading screen (Introduction), then it might be the case that your graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements of Shadowgrounds. The graphics cards that do not meet the requirements do not have the required pixel/vertex shaders, which are used heavily by Shadowgrounds to create the great atmosphere in the game. Your card may run some other relatively new games fine, because unlike Shadowgrounds, those games do not take full advantage of the shaders.

If this is the case, then we are really sorry. These things happen with PC gaming and it's really no-one's fault. If you bought the game at retail, then you could try returning the game (most stores may not accept returns, though, especially if the game has been opened). If you purchased the game via Steam, there is even less of a chance for a return/refund, because Steam simply can't refund games. The minimum requirements are shown in the Steam product page, but we know it's easy to miss them.

We can only hope that you have planned to upgrade the graphics card soon and can eventually play the game...

If your system meets the minimum requirements but the game still crashes, then it is probably something that we can solve. Get in touch with the Feedback Form.

The game runs really slow on my computer
Try setting your graphics options to low settings. Also note that “Disappearing corpses” (dead monsters will disappear in 30 seconds after their death) improves the performance. Another such option is the “Distortion”, which means the beautiful Heat Distortion effect used with the flamethrower and explosions – Distortion should definitely be deselected on slow machines.

I hear no sounds or only some sounds
If you hear no sounds at all, check all your sound cables and make sure sounds are turned on in Windows, and that you speaker setup is correct in Windows. In the Shadowgrounds Launcher, set your Speaker Type to Stereo Speakers.

If you still hear no sounds, uncheck the "Hardware 3D" option in the Sounds menu in the Launcher. This is most likely the culprit. At least Audigy 2 ZS and many other popular cards may have issues having Hardware 3D turned on. (Note that this only applies to sounds - the graphics will still be rendered with hardware.)

The 5.1 sounds don't work?!
Shadowgrounds's 5.1 option in the Launcher is a mistake to some extent. In theory the game supports 5.1, but in reality you won't hear anything from the back speakers. This is because the sound system is camera-dependent, and since the camera is top-down and there's no sound sources in the sky, you won't hear a thing. Sorry for the confusion! The 5.1 support (in the Launcher) may be disabled in a future patch.

After playing for a while, my fps drops drastically
This error may occur with certain graphics cards with certain drivers. You should preferably pause the game by pressing the ESC button, and then try visiting the operating system desktop once by pressing alt-tab (not by exiting the game). Then go back to the game in similar manner, or click the Shadowgrounds bar in the Taskbar. This should fix the poor fps.

When I start the game it says "Version mismatch"?!
This error is due to a copied executable file. If you have bought the game from a store, this error should not happen. Please contact Support for more information.

If you have the Steam version and this happens, then there is some other problem, and you should post a message on the messageboard, or on the Steam forums.

I can't start a co-op game - how to do it?
To start a co-op gamepad game, follow these steps:

-> Check that your gamepads show up in your operating system’s Game Controllers (in Control Panel)
-> Launch Shadowgrounds
-> Go to Profiles and create a new player profile for each gamepad/player, or modify an existing profile.
-> Select one of the newly created profiles and go to Options menu.
-> Set up the button configuration and the X and Y axis (for aiming, usually mapped to the right analog stick).
-> Repeat the process for each player participating in the game
-> When all players have configured their gamepads and/or keyboard+mouse, select New Game (or Load Game if you have a previously saved Co-op game).
-> Select Co-Operative, then the difficulty level, and press Start.
-> That's it! Have fun!

I have very low FPS in missions with water
The water effects use procedural textures, which may cause some problems. These will help:

- Set the Launcher to Low or Very Low settings, and play the game

OR

- In the Launcher Advanced menu, select Low or Very Low in the Misc box (lower-left corner).

There's some weird graphics sparkles on the screen when flashlight is off?!
This problem is very rare but may happen on some graphics cards. The problem is related to the glow buffer. It has been noted on at least GeForce FX5900 XT. This only happens when the flashlight is turned off.

However, the fix is very simple: Deselect "Render Glow" from the Launcher Advanced menu. If this does not help, then turn off "Distortion Effects" too. Now the problem should be gone.

The game can't play videos / WMV codec problems
A very minor portion of players have some problems with the WMV codecs used by the game. Some of the cutscenes use rendered videos and these use WMV. The required WMV codecs should have been installed during the installation process, but it might be that they don't work on some computers.

You may also get a message like this when trying to launch the game or during the game: "The procedure entrypoint WMCreateReader could not be located in the dynamic link library WMVCore.DLL." (or similar).

Luckily there is a simple fix for this: Download Windows Media Player 10 from Microsoft.

I can't use all the keyboard buttons?
Please see the Patch Help section for more information on this.

The game crashes at New Atlantis loading screen
One user has reported that the demo played fine for the first two missions, but the New Atlantis level crashed right after the loading screen. In the Steam demo, the computer rebooted itself, and on the normal demo the New Atlantis introduction cutscene played ok but then crashed and the computer rebooted itself.

The problem went away when the user updated his graphics and sound card drivers.

Another user had the same problem (but without the computer rebooting), but this time the problem simply went away with another try. It is always suggested to try the same thing at least three times.

I have NVIDIA SLI or ATI Crossfire graphics solution - and problems!
There have been some reports of NVIDIA SLI and ATI Crossfire solutions (two graphics cards being used for performance gains etc) not being able to run Shadowgrounds as well as they should.

One such issue with an NVIDIA SLI configuration resulted in less performance than with only one card enabled. "Square textures appear across the screen" on one ATI Crossfire configuration.

Currently there is no other solution to these problems but to disable the other card and run Shadowgrounds with only one graphics card enabled.

FRENCH/SPANISH/GERMAN/FINNISH RETAIL VERSIONS:

The game asks for CD 1 to be inserted!
The French, Spanish, German and Finnish original retail versions use copy protection that may cause problems with some users. However, these problems were solved in the 1.04 Patch (June 2006).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is the game so dark?
The game being dark is a conscious choice to keep up the great atmosphere. If you desperately need to see more, you can use the Gamma level slider in the Options menu to brighten the screen.

Why is the camera top-down?
We wanted to create a top-down action game, because there hasn't been many lately. Top-down is a great camera especially for fast-paced action games like Shadowgrounds. We believe that games should have a great variety, and that not all games need to be first person shooters.

However, you should note that Shadowgrounds features a "Free Camera" mode where the camera is not locked to the original position. You can also slightly alter the pitch of the camera. It's still top-down, but might suit your play style better.

Is there a first person mode?
No. However, it is possible that some Shadowgrounds mods will attempt a first person camera. The game engine supports first person to some extent.

Does the game support multiple mice or keyboards?
Unfortunately, no. Gamepads are recommended for co-op play.

Is Internet/LAN multiplayer support coming to Shadowgrounds?
Never say never, but at the moment it doesn't seem likely. As mentioned on the Co-Op Mode section, the same computer Co-Op was added very late in the development process, and even that required quite a bit of extra effort. Internet/LAN is a different beast altogether - it is much, much more complex and would require reworking of the underlying game engine. It is best not to keep too much hopes up for that.

Does Shadowgrounds run on Windows XP 64?
Shadowgrounds should run fine on Windows XP 64. Due to possible differences in DirectX and other system components, this is not a 100% guarantee, though. The game has been reported to run flawlessly on "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition (5.2, Build 3790)" (Data Execution Prevention enabled as well).

Will there be a Shadowgrounds 2?
Possibly. We would love to do Shadowgrounds 2, no question about it. An expansion pack is also possible. These also depend a little bit on sales - if the sales are high, then the chances of an expansion or even a sequel get higher. Nothing is certain at this point, and we hope that everyone also remembers the Level Editor and future Mods, which should be a very welcome addition.

What will be Frozenbyte's next project?
We are working on a couple of different, extremely cool concepts, and at least one or two of them will eventually be created. We can't reveal much information yet but you should keep your eye on http://www.frozenbyte.com for the latest news. You can also join the Shadowgrounds Mailing List, which will eventually be turned into a general Frozenbyte Games Mailing List.

Where can I download the Rtzon King song?
You can download the song at our composer Ari Pulkkinen's own website. A remix is also available.

How long are the missions?
Shadowgrounds takes around 10-20 hours to complete, depending on the play style. Below are the developers' approximations for each mission if using a fairly "normal" play style (i.e. checking some corners but not absolutely everything). This might be useful to know if you know that you have limited time in front of the computer. Use this as a general guide, i.e. "Mission 4 takes double the time as Mission 2".

Mission 1 - 15 minutes
Mission 2 - 30 minutes
Mission 3 - 30 minutes
Mission 4 - 60-75 minutes
Mission 5 - 45-60 minutes
Mission 6 - 45-60 minutes
Mission 7 - 60-75 minutes
Mission 8 - 45-60 minutes
Mission 9 - 60-75 minutes
Mission 10 - 45-60 minutes
Mission 11 - 45 minutes (incl. end cutscene + credits)

GENERAL INFORMATION ON...

Motherboard integrated sound chips
In some cases, if you are getting very low framerates during fights, even when you have selected the very low settings, a motherboard integrated sound chip may be the reason. If you are using an integrated sound chip, you should make sure you have installed the latest drivers for it. In certain cases, we've noticed a huge CPU performance loss due to integrated sound chips / old sound chip drivers.

Widescreen resolutions and manual configuration
Shadowgrounds does support widescreen resolutions to a certain extent. You can manually alter the resolutions in options.txt. This can be found in Config\options.txt (or in Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\shadowgrounds\Config\options.txt on the Steam version).

Open the file and find "Display" and then the lines "screen_height = xxxx" and "screen_width = xxxx". Change these to whatever you want the resolution to be, for example 1050 and 1680. Note that the height is given first, not the width.

The GUI will still look a bit stretched and there may be some minor problems with cutscenes. But at least the game itself should look quite alright and better on widescreen than using any of the normal resolutions.

You can also check Widescreen Gaming Forum for a detailed look at Shadowgrounds in widescreen. The game actually received a nice silver award for the widescreen support.

Integrated graphics cards / laptop graphics cards
Shadowgrounds does not run on many integrated graphics cards or laptop graphics cards. Please also note that Shadowgrounds does not run on GeForce 4 MX cards.

Below is a list of TESTED integrated graphics chipsets that DO NOT run Shadowgrounds:

- Intel GMA900
- Intel GMA915
- Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL (used in Sony Vaio VGC-FB53 etc)
- Intel(R) 82945
- Intel(R) 82865G
- NVIDIA GeForce 5400Go (laptop GPU)

There are many more integrated solutions that cannot run the game, these are simply the tested/reported ones. Please try the Shadowgrounds Demo before buying the full game if you are not sure the game will run.

STEAM QUESTIONS / TROUBLESHOOTING

Can I register the retail version with Steam? Is there a CD key?
The retail versions of Shadowgrounds doesn't come with a CD key, which means you can't register Shadowgrounds with Steam.

There are no big differences between the retail version and the Steam version. Steam gets the updates automatically but the same updates are made available as retail patches also. If you want to create your own missions or mods, we suggest you use the retail version of Shadowgrounds (the Steam version supports all this as well but it's just a little bit harder to give support for in case of problems). For everyone else, simply choose the version that you are most comfortable with (some people prefer to have a physical box, others like the instant download - choose the one you want).

The Launcher takes ages to load!
This problem was fixed with the first Steam patch (in June 2006).

General Steam solutions
Here are the general suggestions for solving Steam-related problems:

* Restart Steam

* Verify files; Click the Properties button in the Steam menu (while Shadowgrounds is selected), then "Local Files" and then "Verify integrity of game cache".

* Delete ALL local game content (\SteamApps\common\shadowgrounds folder) and re-download the game.

The demo/game doesn't work / launch!
Some Steam users have trouble launching the game. Usually the problems are solved with re-downloading the game, or simply just restarting Steam. Also, please see the General Steam solutions.

The game download has stopped at 99% and I can't play
If Shadowgrounds hasn't been downloaded 100%, it won't work. So you need to get the download meter to 100%. Try quitting Steam and restarting it. This also helps if there's "Updating 0%" or other such messages that don't seem to make any progress.

Also, please see the General Steam solutions.

I hear no sounds in the game
Some users have sound problems with the Steam demo and/or full version. The symptoms are that there is no music, no speech (vocals), and no sound effects.

It seems that the sound problem is caused by a crash that very, very rarely occurs when the user tries to adjust the settings in the game's Options menu. After the crash or Blue Screen of Death, the game simply has no sounds anymore. For some users, the only sound that works is the "let's kick their ass" vocal associated with the Speech slider. For others, nothing works.

However, the solution has been found. Two users solved this by deleting ALL of the local content (at least \SteamApps\youraccount\shadowgrounds folder and the shadowgrounds.gcf file) and then re-downloading the entire game through Steam again. Now the sounds should work again. Note that since Steam moved to the new file system (not using the .gcf anymore), this problem may have been resolved.

A similar problem seems to happen with some E-MU sound cards. If you have such card and problems, and sound driver updates don't help, then check if you have an integrated soundchip on your motherboard and use that while you play Shadowgrounds.

I get a Visual C++ error?!
Some Steam users get a Visual C++ error of some sorts either when launching Shadowgrounds or during play (crash). Currently there is no solution to this. It is suspected to be a problem with Steam and certain systems, but it could also be a problem with the game itself.

Please see the General Steam solutions as they may help in this case too.

"This game is currently unavailable"?!
There has been two reports of this happening. When the user is trying to launch Shadowgrounds via Steam, Steam comes up with an error dialog that says "This game is currently unavailable, please try again at another time" (or something similar).

The Steam Help offers many solutions to this, so please check that also.

Please see the General Steam solutions as they may help in this case too.

Another thing to try is to run the game in Offline mode.

Running the game in Offline Mode
The Steam version of Shadowgrounds can be run in Offline mode. You need to disconnect or disable your Internet connection and then start Steam, and Steam will ask if you want to run the game in Offline Mode. This may help in some cases.

The Steam Help offers a more detailed version of how to run the game in Offline Mode.

Problems with savegames
Any problems with Steam and savegames should be gone now. For the record we will leave the original solution below, however you most likely will not experience any savegame problems anymore.

Since Steam made Shadowgrounds use the new Steam filesystem, many technical problems were solved. However, one new problem was introduced: Sometimes the game loses the ability to save.

The simplest solution is to create a totally new profile (in the menu's Profile option) and use it. The game should now be able to save.

If you are missing any earlier save games, you should check the \Steam\SteamApps\youraccount\shadowgrounds\ directory, which may contain the old files and thus the savegames in \Profile\Default\Save\ . Most likely you can simply copy these saves to your new profile's Save folder (in \Steam\SteamApps\common\shadowgrounds\Profiles\yournewprofile\ ).

PATCH HELP

Patch 1.05: "help" console command
If you get stuck in the game, open up the console by pressing the F8 key (a grey console window should appear), and then write "help". You should now get a simple explanation of the activated "ghost mode" (which allows the player to walk through walls, objects and so on, for 5 seconds).

Patch 1.04: Error reporting
The patch adds error reporting, which can help Frozenbyte, the developers, to identify and fix problems in the game. This only works for game crashes. What this means is that the computer creates a "dump" file of the crash, and you can send this to Frozenbyte.

This is the normal crash screen. Click "Don't Send".

If you get a crash screen like the above, then it is very likely that the crash dump file has been generated. The crash dump is located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson

You may have to set Windows to show hidden folders to access the "Application Data" directory. Check the timestamp of the user.dmp file and make sure it was created around the time of the crash. If the date and time match the time when the game crashed, then we're all set!

Take the user.dmp and send it to fb info with a subject line "Shadowgrounds user dump" or something like that. Also please describe what happened in as much detail as you can. Thanks.

If the user.dmp isn't found in that directory, you can search for *.dmp on your Windows partition. It can be that the .dmp simply wasn't created even if the game crashed. The .dmp may not be generated for all types of crashes, and there's little that can be done about that. (If you are an expert user, you can try disabling Windows error reporting, as it may have an effect on the file generation.)

This is the crash screen when Windows error reporting is turned off

Please note that the "appcompat" file that you may find in the technical section of the error screen IS NOT the file we need. The appcompat file simply does not have the necessary information.

Note to Steam users: At the moment (5th of June) we are not 100% sure how this works with the Steam version. More information soon.

If you are having problems with Dr Watson, you should check that the settings for it are ok. Go to the properties of My Computer (if you don't know how, simply go to the screen where you see your harddisks, and then click the "Up" arrow near the top of the screen, and then right-click on the My Computer icon and choose Properties). Now click on the Advanced tab, and then click on Error Reporting.

Now make sure that you either have Error Reporting enabled (for Windows operating system and Programs), or that it is disabled but "But notify me when critical errors occur" is checked. Like this:

Make sure the checkbox or checkboxes are selected

Patch 1.04: Keyboard-only aiming possibility (no mouse required)
The patch adds a possibility to use only the keyboard for playing the game. This is most useful as a co-op solution. The following enables the keyboard-only mode for player 1. (First it deactivates the mouse cursor, then sets the control aiming scheme to keyboard, and finally unbinds any previous controls bound to alt, then rebinding it to a special keyboard aim scheme strafe.)

You must start a game (new game or a load game) and then open the console by pressing F8. Then write these lines (remember, you can use the TAB button to "autofill" parts of the commands, although it doesn't work for all commands):

/1st_player_has_cursor 0
/1st_player_control_scheme 12

unbind alt
bind camera_unit_align_lock_toggle,alt

You may get some weird side effects on your first try, such as wildly swinging camera. In that case you should quit the game and start it again, and do the process one more time. Then it should finally work. And of course, you need to set the other controls also, such as shooting etc.

Please note that this feature also requires a rather good keyboard. Many new keyboards may not accept more than a few simultaneous keystrokes, which can cause trouble in co-op games. Also, this works only for the first player at the moment (due to the keybinds).

UPDATE: We have identified a problem with the above lines, and co-op in general. Please stay tuned for a fix...

Patch 1.04: Windowed mode now with titlebar
The patch adds "titlebar support" when running Shadowgrounds in Windowed mode. There are some known issues with this but in general this feature should be enough for those users who want to move the window (if using multiple monitors, for example).

To do this, you need to edit the options.txt in the Config directory. You will find the needed lines in the Display section, and they are (not necessarily in this order, and there may be some other lines in-between):

maximize_window = 1
window_titlebar = 1
windowed = 0

Please note that you should first run the patched version of the game at least once (so the game will create the "window_titlebar = 1" line).

Patch 1.04: Unofficial support for more keyboard buttons
Shadowgrounds allows only certain keyboard buttons to be mapped as controls. However, some people might want to use buttons that are not supported initially. Before the 1.04 Patch you could only use the regular keys. However, the 1.04 Patch expands the keys a little bit. Such could be the left and right brackets on the US keyboard (located next to the P letter).

This is possible but it requires that you manually edit the keybinds.txt which is located in Profiles\yourprofile\Config\ directory. Please take a backup copy of this file before you edit it.

Now, you should see lines of text with a keyboard button next to it, such as:
attack = button-1

Before you can map your desired button to the file, you need to know the correct number for it. This might be hard to obtain, because it's only included in the DirectX Input key codes names, and doesn't seem to be readily available on the Internet. The best way is to experiment or get in touch via the Feedback Form. The key codes are related to their position on the keyboard.

In the case of the left and right brackets, their numbers are #26 and #27, respectively. So if you want the left bracket to shoot the primary fire, you would write:
attack = #26

That should work.

(The patch fixes a bug with the original Shadowgrounds version. The bug caused the game to mess up the keybinds.txt file when quitting if # characters were present.)
